How to Activate Cortana alpha version in India, Canada, and Australia

Yesterday, the Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 started trickling for users who are on Windows Phone 8.1 Preview for Developers. As the Windows Phone team at Microsoft shared a few days ago, the latest update brings Cortana to China and UK in beta and to India, Australia, and Canada in India.

This early adopter program for the latter is opt-in, and gives people the option to try Cortana using English language models from the US and the UK. Let's see how we can configure it for Windows Phone devices in these regions.

Here are the Steps to activate Cortana alpha version

Essentially, all you need to do is to change your speech settings to English US or UK. If any other permutation works, let us know in the comments.

  •     If you've changed region or language settings previously to try out Cortana when it released for the US, revert to the original settings for your country. A restart maybe required if you change these settings. If you haven't, confirm that the settings are in order.
  •         Language: English (India)/English (Canada)/English (Australia)
  •         Country/Region: India/Canada/Australia
  •     If you've not made any changes before, you'd need to start here and just change your speech settings.
  •                  Speech: English (United Kingdom)/English (United States)/English (United Kingdom)

Finally the cyan update for Lumia 520 and 925 are available

AT&T will start rolling out the over-the-air Windows Phone 8.1 update today to its customers who own the Lumia 925 and the Lumia 520 smartphones.

This new update follows on the heels of AT&T offering Microsoft's latest mobile OS for the Lumia 1520. According to AT&T:

"The Windows Phone 8.1 update for the Nokia Lumia 925 and 520 brings you a personal smartphone experience that puts the people and things you really care about right at your fingertips. Great new features like Cortana, a personal virtual assistant built around you, is the only smartphone assistant who can set reminders by people, as well as by time or location. She can remind you to pick up your dry cleaning on the way home from work or remind you to text or call your grandma and wish her a happy birthday."

As we have mentioned before with previous OTA updates to Windows Phone 8.1, anyone who has the Lumia 925 and 520 and has already downloaded and installed the Developer Preview version needs to downgrade to Windows Phone 8.0 before they download the new over-the-air update to 8.1. Will you be updating your AT&T Lumia 925 and 520 phones today?

USB pen drives under threat, as researchers show new vulnerability

USB devices such as mice, keyboards and thumb-drives can be used to hack into personal computers in a potential new class of attacks that evade all known security protections, a top computer researcher revealed.

Karsten Nohl, chief scientist with Berlin’s SR Labs, noted that hackers could load malicious software onto tiny, low-cost computer chips that control functions of USB devices but which have no built-in shields against tampering with their code.

“You cannot tell where the virus came from. It is almost like a magic trick,” said Nohl, whose research firm is known for uncovering major flaws in mobile phone technology.

The finding shows that bugs in software used to run tiny electronics components that are invisible to the average computer user can be extremely dangerous when hackers figure out how to exploit them. Security researchers have increasingly turned their attention to uncovering such flaws.

Nohl said his firm has performed attacks by writing malicious code onto USB control chips used in thumb drives and smartphones. Once the USB device is attached to a computer, the malicious software can log keystrokes, spy on communications and destroy data, he said.

Computers do not detect the infections when tainted devices are inserted into a PC because anti-virus programs are only designed to scan for software written onto memory and do not scan the “firmware” that controls the functioning of those devices, he said.

Nohl and Jakob Lell, a security researcher at SR Labs, will describe their attack method at next week’s Black Hat hacking conference in Las Vegas in a presentation titled: “Bad USB – On Accessories that Turn Evil.”

Thousands of security professionals gather at the annual conference to hear about the latest hacking techniques, including ones that threaten security of business computers, consumer electronics and critical infrastructure.

Nohl said he would not be surprised if intelligence agencies like the National Security Agency have already figured out how to launch attacks using this technique.

Last year he presented research at Black Hat on breakthrough methods for remotely attacking SIM cards on mobile phones. In December, documents leaked by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden demonstrated that the U.S. spy agency was using a similar technique for surveillance, which it called “Monkey Calendar.”

An NSA spokeswoman declined to comment.

SR Labs tested the technique by infecting controller chips made by major manufacturer Taiwan’s Phison Electronics Corp, and placing them into USB memory drives and smartphones running Google Inc’s Android operating system.

Similar chips are made by Silicon Motion Technology and Alcor Micro. Nohl said his firm did not test devices with chips from those manufacturers.

Phison and Google did not respond to requests for comment. Officials with Silicon Motion and Alcor Micro could not immediately be reached.

Nohl said he believes hackers would have a “high chance” of corrupting other kinds of controller chips besides those made by Phison, because their manufacturers are not required to secure software. He said those chips, once infected, could be used to infect mice, keyboards and other devices that connect via USB.

“The sky is the limit. You can do anything at all,” he said.

In his tests, Nohl said he was also able to gain remote access to a computer by having the USB instruct the computer to download a malicious program with instructions that the PC believed were coming from a keyboard. He said he was also able to change what are known as DNS network settings on a computer, essentially instructing the machine to route Internet traffic through malicious servers.

Once a computer is infected, it could be programmed to infect all USB devices that are subsequently attached to that PC, which would then corrupt machines that they contact.

“Now all of your USB devices are infected. It becomes self-propagating and extremely persistent,” Nohl said. “You can never remove it.”

Christof Paar, a professor of electrical engineering at Germany’s University of Bochum who reviewed the findings, said he believes the new research will prompt others to take a closer look at USB technology, and potentially lead to the discovery of more bugs. He called on manufacturers to move to better protect their chips to thwart any attacks.

VLC for Windows Phone ready for windows phone but not this week

VLC is all set and ready to launch its all new app for the windows phone but this app may hit the store after the next week.
Thomas Nigro, designer/developer for Videolan who is working on the Windows Phone version of VLC, has tweeted that the app is ready for the Windows Store, writing:
His tweet was accompanies by the above picture, showing the prominent VLC tile.

He did however caution that the app will not hit the Windows Phone Store next week, as he will be busy showing the app at the Microsoft product fair tomorrow.  The app is now a universal app, working on both Windows and Windows Phone, which should help keep the app maintained going forward.

VLC for Windows 8 and Windows Phone was the result of a kickstarter which raised more than $40,000 from the Windows community more than a year ago, and the company has also received some technical support from Microsoft also.  While waiting for the app however more multi-format video players have arrived on the market however, reducing the excitement around the arrival of the app in the Windows Phone Store.

Facebook Messanger App for Windows Phone Now supports the Video Sharing Option in its new update

Facebook has just updated its stand alone Messenger app for Windows Phone to version 6.0, adding in support for sharing videos for the first time along with a couple of other improvements.

The change log for version 6.0 of the app shows what's new:

Video: Send photos and video instantly with one tap. When people send you videos, play them     right in the app. For sending the video you have to hold the camera button to share the video.
Stickers: With recent stickers, find your favorite stickers faster.
Plus, other improvements to make the app faster and more reliable

The addition of video sharing will certainly be a popular one and being able to quickly find favorite stickers will come in handy as well. This update comes as Facebook is slowly ditching messenger features in its iOS and Android apps and offering them in its Messenger app, although at the moment the Windows Phone port, which is actually published by Microsoft itself, still contains messaging features.

Android's Next Named Release (Lollipop?) Will Be Announced at Google I/O

Going into Google's big developer conference, one of the biggest questions was whether or not we would see a whole new version—the "L" version—of Android. The answer is yes, and it comes from Android frontman Sundar Pichai via Bloomberg Businessweek.

"From Businessweek:

This year, Pichai will preview the next release (Lollipop? Lemonhead?) for the first time at I/O rather than waiting until the fall. It's a significant shift toward greater transparency. "I want the world to understand what we are doing sooner," he says."

Pichai didn't stop there either, mentioning not only Android Wear but also Android TV. Granted, both of these are pretty much locks for Google I/O considering Android Wear has already been announced and Android TV is pretty much an open secret. Though a comment from Pichai on how "crazy" it is that folks have to go to the doctor to have their blood pressure and heart rate checked hints at the as-yet-unannounced Google Fit.

Nokia X2 : Microsoft First Android Smartphone

The Nokia X2 packs decent specifications, an easy-to-use interface and a good choice of apps into a well-designed shell that lights up when the screen is active. But that's not its best feature. But the best is its price  It's going to cost just €99 for the dual SIM model when it goes on sale globally in July.

Microsoft describes the Nokia X2 as a smartphone designed to introduce "the next billion people to the internet and cloud services." The latest in a growing line of affordable Nokia-branded, forked-Android powered handsets targeting the cost conscious and those in emerging consumer markets, the X2 might just do that.

Unlike the X-phones that have gone before it, the new handset has a bit of internal processing power, a whole 1GB of RAM; a decent rear-facing camera (5MP) with flash and a front-facing camera too. It also integrates apps and Microsoft services better than before, so it comes preloaded with Skype for making video calls and OneDrive for cloud storage, which, like on Nokia Lumia handsets, will automatically upload all images captured with the camera so that its onboard storage doesn't keep filling up.

Although the operating system is a fork of Android, it is presented in a way that looks more like a Windows Phone environment, so there are live tiles showing what's going on in terms of calendar appointments and open apps. Simplifying things further is a fast lane setting that just shows recent activity -- so the last apps or web pages viewed. Or, for the more adventurous there's a pin-board set-up where users can ‘pin' things to the homescreen like photos or links.

The screen itself is generous in size if not resolution. It measures 4.3-inches and is integrated into the chassis in a way that gives the handset an "inner glow" when in use. Highlighting this beacon effect even more is that just like all current Nokia phones, it's available predominantly in loud colors -- glossy orange, glossy black and glossy green, with a glossy yellow and glossy white version in the pipeline.

"The Nokia X family is going from strength to strength, with the Nokia X smartphone achieving top-selling status in Pakistan, Russia, Kenya and Nigeria, while earning the third-best-selling smartphone spot in India," said Timo Toikkanen, head of Mobile Phones, Microsoft Devices Group. "The Nokia X2 elevates the Nokia X experience with a stellar new design, ease of use and new Microsoft experiences. We're proud to continue to bring smartphone innovation to lower and lower price points."

The handset goes on sale "in select countries" Tuesday and will roll out globally in July with a suggested off-contract retail price of €99. For that, consumers will get a handset with a Snapdragon 200 processor featuring a dual core 1.2GHz CPU, 1GB of RAM, 4GB of onboard storage plus support for MicroSD cards (up to 32GB) and of course, 15GB of free cloud storage via OneDrive.

Windows phone updates Extras + Info, Display, Device Hub, and Call + SMS Filter with unknown improvements

Microsoft Mobile (previously the hardware division at Nokia) has released new versions for a number of system apps available for Lumia Windows Phones. Extras + Info and Call + SMS Filter are joined by Display and Device Hub, each receiving a new version with unknown changes due to the lack of up-to-date changelogs.

The Extras + Info store listing (now on version 3.9.2.1) states that more minor improvements have been implemented, but this changelog has been present for some time. Still, we'll put this latest version down to yet more bug fixing taking place.

We can see the removal of Feedback to Nokia and the addition of SpamFilter. As for Call + SMS Filter, again we're not too sure what has been included in this update. The changelog is for an older release, but we'd imagine the same fits for what's added in the latest version, which is currently on 1.9.2.1. As well as these two system apps, both Device Hub and Display have also been bumped to a new version, again with unknown changes (versions 3.4.2.35 and 3.1.0.56 respectively).

Let us know in the comments should you notice anything we've missed! It's worth noting that we were required to reboot our Lumia 1520 testing these updates for access to Extras + Info to be granted (the menu entry in the settings list didn't respond to taps). This could be a glitch with our device, but be sure to give the Windows Phone a reboot if not all is well.

  1. Download Extras + Info
  2. Download Call + SMS Filter
  3. Download Device Hub
  4. Download Display

How to give users the option for a Transparent Live Tile in Windows phone

Starting with Windows Phone 8.1 users can select a background wallpaper for their Start screen. The trick only works with apps that have a transparent Live Tile, which has resulted in a massive push by fans for more apps with those see-through Tiles. But like all things in life, sometimes it goes too far. For instance, many people have – rightly – complained that they liked those 'signature' colors for certain apps because it made finding them easier. I agree.

What's the best way to rectify the situation? Give users a choice. Here's how to do it.

Developers should provide a toggle switch to their audience to enable or disable the use of transparent Live Tiles. It's technically feasible and even easy to do with the added benefit of making people very happy.

The developer behind the popular Dribble app Threepointer, Stan Gursky, has offered this possibility in his app through a simple toggle screen found in settings. But even better, Gursky has just shared the templates so that other developers can do the same. The transparent Live Tile template is a Photoshop file (psd), 100% vector (scalable) and even comes in light or dark themes.

As someone who reads a lot of comments and keeps a pulse on the Windows Phone community, I think developers would be crazy to not offer this option.

How to get free security updates for Windows XP -- until 2019

You can’t simply install the updates -- that would be too easy -- and you’ll receive a version mismatch error if you try. But a simple registry tweak is enough to fix that.

Create a text document, and call it XP.reg. You’ll need to make sure .reg is the proper extension -- so not "XP.reg.txt". If it’s not showing up as a registry file, open any folder, go to Tools > Folder Options, select View and uncheck 'Show hidden files and folders'. That should fix the problem.

Right-click the file, and select Edit. Paste in the following:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\WPA\PosReady]
"Installed"=dword:00000001

Save it, and then double-click the file. That will make that change to the registry. That’s all you need to do. Windows will now automatically fetch updates designed for POSReady 2009, ensuring XP remains protected for the foreseeable future.

This trick only works for 32-bit editions of XP, but there’s a workaround for 64-bit versions

How to continue getting free security updates for Windows XP -- until 2019

Officially, Microsoft stopped releasing automatic public updates for Windows XP over a month ago after over 12 years. Now a registry hack has been found that, when placed in the OS, allows it to continue receiving updates.

The hack was first reported by BetaNews and later confirmed by ZDNet. By making a few changes in the registry of XP, the hack basically tricks the automatic update servers at Microsoft into thinking the OS is Windows Embedded POSReady 2009. The OS is based on Windows XP Service Pack 3 and it will continue to get security updates from Microsoft until April 2019.

The specific registry hack works with 32-bit systems but the owners of the few 64-bit Windows XP PCs can find a workaround on this forum. However, it's more than possible that this method will be short lived as Microsoft could make changes to block any securty updates that use this hack.

It should also be noted, as Microsoft has done many times, that Windows XP is well over 12 years old and PC owners should really upgrade to a more recent version of the OS that will not only keep getting security updates but will be more secure overall.

Leak : Windows Phone 9 Preview to hit in Q2-Q3 2015

A documents had earlier been leaked on the Neowin forums showing some of Microsoft’s roadmap for the next year.

That document had been heavily censored, but Myce.com managed to get the full uncensored version, which has only one titbit relevant to Windows Phone users.

According to the document we can expect Windows Phone 9 Preview to hit the market around the same time as Windows 9, in Q2 or Q3 2015, presumably with a final release in Q4 2015.

This would give us around 16 months between major releases, only somewhat faster than the 17 months between Windows Phone 8 (October 2012) and Windows Phone 8.1 (May 2014), and probably not the pace which is needed given the competitive environment.

Ngram Beta - the official Telegram app on Windows Phone

Remember earlier this year when Facebook bought WhatsApp? The news was met with a heavy amount of criticism from users not wanting a company like Facebook controlling their primary means of communication. The backlash led to an exodus as users left WhatsApp to try alternative messaging platforms. Telegram was one of the few messaging services who greatly benefited from the fallout. We looked at some of the best Telegram apps on Windows Phone. Migram and Ngram were our two favorites. One of them is now look to be the official Telegram app for Windows Phone.

Telegram (telegram.org) is a fast, secure and free messaging service. They held a contest earlier this year for developers to create an official app for Windows Phone. Many apps were submitted, but one emerged as king.

Going off the publisher information in the Windows Phone Store it looks like Ngram will be our official app going forward. The app was updated yesterday and a few eagle eyes out there noticed a new publisher name – Telegram Messaging LLP.

While the official Telegram app still lists Ngram as ‘unoffocial’, it’s probably only a matter of time until the baton is fully transferred and Ngram is crowned as the official Telegram app for Windows Phone.

Microsoft says that they are working to help fix WhatsApp on Windows Phone

A few days ago, the WhatsApp port for Windows Phone 8 and 8.1 was pulled from the operating system's store front with no advanced warning and no reason. Now the leader of the Windows Phone team at Microsoft, Joe Belfiore, has used his Twitter feed to give an explanation for the move.

Belfiore's statements would indicate that there might be something wrong with Windows Phone 8 Update 3, rather than the WhatsApp software itself, that's causing the bug. The app has not been made available for download for five days, although WPCentral reports that the private beta version is still live and being updated for its testers.

Hopefully Microsoft and WhatsApp can work quickly to get the Windows Phone version back up to speed ASAP. We will post up a report when the app is available again to download.

Here why the all new Lumia 630 only has 512 MB RAM- Microsoft Explains

Many feel that the Nokia Lumia 630 would have been a more competitive device if it had 1 GB of RAM.

It turns out however that Microsoft has been actively working rather hard to make 512 MB of RAM not just a realistic but very viable specification.

Nokia Lumia 630
According to a blog post on MSDN one of the major focuses in Windows Phone 8.1 was to optimise the OS to consume less memory.

30% of the entire engineering budget was devoted to optimization, and as a consequence:

"…apps written using Windows 8.1 app model and XAML stack consistently runs 30% faster than apps written using the Windows Phone 8 Silverlight app model. It also consumes significantly less memory…"

This does unfortunately leave Microsoft once again with the challenge of explaining why 512 MB on their OS equals 1 GB on Android (an issue that Apple never seems to have despite the relatively low RAM on their handsets also).

Of course the real motivation for this effort is to sell extremely low cost handsets, and unfortunately in that area Microsoft is still being out-competed by OEMs like Motorola.

Temple Run 2 : Now for 512 MB Windows Phones

Remember when Temple Run 2 came out in December with Xbox Live? It launched without support for low-memory devices like the Lumia 520. That changes today with the latest update for Temple Run 2. Head into the Windows Phone Store and you’ll be able to pick up Temple Run 2 for your 512 MB Windows Phone.

Temple Run has been updated to version 1.9.1.0. We’re not seeing any feature changes to the game, but that doesn’t really matter since millions of Windows Phone owners finally get access to the game. Do let us know if you notice anything else new with the update, but so far this looks just to be about giving access to those with low-memory devices.

Twitter- Now Mute those post which you don't want to see

People who are having Twitter account sometime follow those people whose post or tweets or retweets they really don't want to see or read, so for those twitter announced the all new feature named "mute" which will enable the users to mute post or tweets they don't want have on their feed.

Muting a user on Twitter means their Tweets and Retweets will no longer be visible in your home timeline, and you will no longer receive push or SMS notifications from that user. The muted user will still be able to fave, reply to, and retweet your Tweets; you just won’t see any of that activity in your timeline.
The nice thing is that the muted Twitter user won't have any idea that their messages can no longer be seen. Of course, muted users can be "unmuted" at any time. Twitter plans to roll out this new feature in the coming weeks to web users, along with iOS and Android clients. There's no word yet on if these features will be enabled for the Windows 8 and Windows Phone platforms,  Twitter's blog post.

This is a latest change Twitter has made to its services.

Quick launcher - makes your apps always handy

Few days ago a all new app has been arrived in the windowsphone store, named 'Quick Launcher' which makes your favourite apps always handy.

Using this you can able to switch your favourite apps faster and easier.  You can switch your apps with a simple swipe to access to action center, but after applying "clear all" all the shortcuts of quick launcher just disappeared from the action center.

It is a nice app for windowsphone8 but it need some improvement or update, it has a bug, when you open any app via quick launcher, if corresponding app is not installed then it crashes (show search for app for less than a second then crashes). And, it require such API that user itself make there own shortcuts to the launcher. And last  Users Interface must be updated or improved.

Desktop Curtain - Hide your clutter

Choose your focus

Desktop Curtain displays a stylized curtain or image that you can use to cover as much—or as little—of your screen as you'd like. You can place the curtain or image…
  • Behind the icons on your desktop, so it acts like a desktop image.
  • On top of your desktop icons, instantly hiding the clutter.
  • Behind the frontmost application, hiding everything but that application.
  • On demand, behind the frontmost window to focus your attention on just that window.

Choose your look

In addition to its built-in curtain, Desktop Curtain can use any picture file, the current OS X desktop picture, or a solid color as its curtain; the choice is yours.
Choose a curtain, an image, or a solid color
You can easily change the color of the stylized curtain, or of any image with translucency.
Desktop Curtain also keeps track of your last 10 used images, making it simple to choose from recently-used images.

You're in control

Desktop Curtain's settings give you full control over when and where you'll see its curtain (or image).
  • On multi-monitor Macs, choose between the display with the menu bar or all connected displays.
  • If you use Desktops (Spaces), choose whether Desktop Curtain shows on all Desktops, or just the current one.
  • Optionally hide Desktop Curtain when entering Mission Control (Exposé).
The Curtain settings tab
You also control the appearance of any images you use as curtains: their axes can be scaled proportionally or independently, or they can be centered or tiled.

Flexible features

Desktop Curtain can be run in any of three modes (standard application, menu bar icon, or completely invisible), and offers fast access to its key features via a contextual menu on the curtain itself, via Dock pop-up menus, or via its menu bar icon's menus.
You can define global hot keys to toggle the curtain's visibility or to isolate the frontmost window, and setting Desktop Curtain launch at login (with its curtain optionally hidden) is as simple as checking a box.
The Advanced settings tab
There's even an optional 'boss mode' hot key that will cover everything, including the Dock and Command-Tab switcher.

Foursquare announces Swarm, its new app for checking in

Foursquare has announced that they are going to launch their all new app called SWARM this summer.  Foursquare is for explorers who want to know about the best spots, and to share what they’ve found with others. Swarm is for people who want the fastest and easiest way to connect with their friends,Swarm aims to facilitate meet-ups with friends more easily by letting you broadcast where you're going next and what your friends' plans are.

"We built Swarm because you’ve told us how often you still have to text your friends: “where are you?” and “what you up to later?” We wanted to build a quick way for you to know these two things for all of your friends. With Swarm, you can easily see which of your friends are out nearby, figure out who is up for grabbing a drink later, and share what you’re up to (faster and more easily than you can in Foursquare today). Swarm will be available on iOS and Android in the coming weeks, and soon after on Windows Phone, but you can read a ton more about it (including screenshots and some videos) on The Verge right now. If you sign up at swarmapp.com, we’ll email you when it’s ready." Foursquare.

"In the near future, the Foursquare app is also going to go through a metamorphosis. Local search today is like the digital version of browsing through the Yellow Pages (remember those?). We believe local search should be personalized to your tastes and informed by the people you trust. The opinions of actual experts should matter, not just strangers. An app should be able answer questions like ‘give me a great date dinner spot’ and not just ‘tell me the nearest gas station.’ We’re right now putting the final touches on this new, discovery-focused version of Foursquare. It’ll be polished and ready for you later this summer." Foursquare.

Swarm is rolling out in upcoming weeks to Android, iOS, with Windows Phone not too much farther behind.
